Who doesn’t love a crime movie? Virtuous thieves certainly get their own. Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy about the reboot of the original film was so good that now, by the way, it has a prequel directed by Ryan Gosling. But back to the release of Lionsgate, which is now available in select movie s, digitally and on demand. The name says it all: a motley crew of well-meaning diddle ready to use their tricks for a good cause.
Straight Thieves is filmed by Anthony Nardolillo (7th & Union, Shine) based on a screenplay by Michael Corcoran in his primary screenplay. The ensemble cast has several familiar faces, including CAM Gagandeep (vicious night, no sorrows), Janie Lee Ortiz (station 19, girls’ trip), Lisa Vidal (Grey’s Anatomy, Being Mary Jane), Carlos Miranda (jewel ring, confliction), Benjamin Schlau (mink, Current conflict) and Danubio Hermosillo (shameless, daring and beautiful). Very similar to the cocaine bear genre, Righteous Thieves is a little different in tone: action, drama, suspense. But the final result is not enough.
Familiar techniques of professional flight
Annabelle (Lisa Vidal) is the leader of a secret organization dedicated to the search for priceless works of art. We quickly see her gather a motley team of art thieves to recover Monet, Picasso, Degas and van Gogh, stolen by the Nazis during World conflict II and now in the possession of the neo-Nazi billionaire oligarch Otto Huizenga (Brian Cousins).. The other recruits are the deputy commander Ed (Carlos Miranda), the hacker Lucille (Jayna Lee Ortiz), the safe thief Nadia (Sasha Mercy) and the “muscular” Bruno (CAM Gagandeep). The aforementioned premise of Virtuous Thieves is quite simple and ultimately lacks stunning twists and turns along the way. Of direction, there is wager royal here and there. And art lover will love the references to Monet, Degas, Picasso and van Gogh, because their paintings are the subject of this theft that disappeared after the second world conflict.
It is now known that the paintings belong to the German venture capitalist Otto Huizenga (Brian Cousins). The opportunity was missed to create an unpleasant twist that thieves the scenes, I mean Christoph Waltz, the State for inglorious rogue. Gagandeep gets some juicy leads as a last-minute addition for the team of thieves, but that’s about it in terms of the types of villains layered throughout the movie.
As noted above, there are elements of a variety of movie tic genres in Straight Thieves, but they are not enough. There could be more action and soon instead of a failed exhibition, especially when a planned flight is approaching and loyalty is tested when the team discover the real reason why Annabelle was looking for long-lost paintings (without revealing too much).
A kind and diverse cast can’t save the caper
Co-star Ortiz, the main actress of the film, recently told Movie Web that she hopes to join Just Thieves so that she can “work with [producer] Jolene Rodriguez, who is the champion of our community and Latinos in movie . And in this industry, his thought is: “I’m going to find a way to create opportunities for my people, my community. “And this is the only way to keep moving for conflicted in this sector. It’s one of those things where it’s really rare to find a predominantly Latino cast, as well as a producer and a director. So, you know, if someone doesn’t give us these opportunities, who will create them unless we start? So, Jolene Rodriguez said 100%: “I don’t care what the movie is about. I don’t care about my character. I want to work together. I want to keep moving the needle.””
The film really protects Latinos on the big screen, and I can’t wait to see what projects Ortiz and his colleagues will undertake next. At the same time, straight thieves can be a springboard to make a more meaningful film that gives them more work with the character and the plot. When the hacking of the central part of the film finally happens, there are no noticeable twists and complications beyond what was expected, just a joint confrontation in the middle of the main character and various security agents. And as noted above, all kinds of brawl scenes are rare. But it’s fun to see Ortiz kicking here and there.
Pop and hip hop fans will absorb the soundtrack with a variety of hits from famous artists, but even music cannot necessarily save virtuous thieves. The Privateer ends on a good note, with the possibility of continuing, that is, future flights for reasons of justice, which could never happen. With more dynamic character and witty twists, Lionsgate’s tardiest release could pave the way for a new franchise like Ocean’s 11, with a more diverse and exciting range of character.
